Although conventional packing columns have excellent selectivity and long column life, better peak asymmetry can be obtained when the sample is acidic, neutral and weakly basic compounds.

However, when analyzing a compound with a strong basicity, the peak shape of the sample may become worse, the tailing will be serious, and the accuracy of the quantitative analysis will decrease. The reason for this phenomenon is that there are residual silanol groups on the stationary phase.

 Although many manufacturers have made a second reaction on the surface of silica gel, the so-called "tail-sealing", to reduce the effect of residual silanols, they often cannot completely eliminate the residual silanols.
